And what was going on in the 1920s? They are referred to as the Roaring Twenties because of the rise in US prosperity after World War I. The era saw the large-scale adoption of automobiles, telephones, motion pictures and electricity. Prohibition of alcohol occurred in the United States giving rise to notorious mobsters like Al Capone.
But most of that excitement was far from Virden New Mexico where the 20s and 30s was a time of drought, widespread unemployment, bankruptcies and foreclosures
What was going on in 1927, the year Fred was born ? It was a year full of modern marvels.
- January 7 – The first transatlantic telephone call is made via radio from New York City to London.
- April 7 – Bell Telephone Co. transmits an image of Herbert Hoover (then the Secretary of Commerce), which becomes the first successful long distance demonstration of television.
- May 27 - Fredrick Parley Jones born in Virden New Mexico, Yay!
- May – Philo Farnsworth of the United States transmits his first experimental electronic TV motion pictures, as opposed to the electro-mechanical TV systems that others had used before.
- May 20–21 – Charles Lindbergh makes the first solo,1` nonstop transatlantic airplane flight, carried out from New York City to Paris, France, in his single-engined aircraft, the Spirit of St. Louis.
- June 8 – Jerry Stiller, American comedian and actor is born. (father to Ben Stiller)
- October 6 – The Jazz Singer (The first feature-length motion picture with dialogue) opens in the United States and it becomes a huge success.[2]
- December 2 – Following 19 years of Ford Model T production, the Ford Motor Company unveils the Ford Model A as its new automobile.
Grandpa Fred Jones' first memory is of his brother Marvin's birth in 1930. He remembers being sent to a neighbors house to get the scale to weigh the baby. The scale had one hook, and he remembers wondering where they were going to hook the baby! Turns out diapers have more than one use :)
